MODEL OF THE MONTH

Miss February 2012:
Megan Budge – Our Sugar-Coated Valentines Surprise!

If there is month of the year that best suited to all things fluffy, sparkly, pink, girly, feathery and fabulous, then it is February! (Um, if not every day). We are delighted to have the smoldering temptress Megan Budge, in some super-hot, pin-up-perfect pictures!

Megan gives the Bonnie Evelyn Model of the Month some va va voom, as we up the sexiness factor for the most romantic month of the year. Wearing headpieces that range from OTT frilly, girlyness to cheeky cuteness and darkly mysterious, these super sweet, deliciously decadent Bonnie Evelyn creations are a treat for the eyes and a feast for the imagination!

Megan, who is the new proprietress of Style Hair and Beauty in Croydon South, is responsible for her flawless complexion and Rita Hayworth-esque, voluminous tresses.  ‘Style Hair and Beauty’ provide all things hair: uni-sex hair cuts, colours, perms, permanent straightening and up-do’s, and beauty: makeup, waxing, spray tanning and eyelash extensions. Megan is also available to do hair and makeup for weddings and special occasions on location.

Thank you to Lucy, for once again helping with hats and things. Also well done me for my first time round of picture taking! Most of all big thanks to Megan for looking so beautiful in the hats and blowing us away with your timeless glamour!

Miss January 2012:
Kelly Bannister,
Summer Bride of our Dreams!

Welcome 2012! To kick off the New Year like we mean it, we have our resident photographer and bride-to-be Kelly Bannister on the other side of the lens, showing off some ultra chic Bonnie Evelyn Bridal pieces! Wearing millinery that ranges from ethereal, vintage and femininely floral, Kelly looks every bit the perfect blushing bride.

Scientist by day, Kelly’s artistic talent shines through in her stunning photography (as you will see in previous ‘Model of the Month photographs’). Being the total babe that she is, looking divine in every bridal hat, fascinator, veil and headpiece, it will make deciding on just one a difficult process!

The pieces themselves are unique, using handmade silk flowers centered with fresh water pearls, fire polished beads and precious stones. Beaded French Abaca has been used to create fluid swirls while an experiment with Silk Abaca has taken on life as a soft, lustrous, vintage style hat with veil. The ultimate in decadent adornment is embodied by the cropped tulle hooded cape, which is encrusted in silk flowers and jewels.

These Bonnie Evelyn original bridal creations can be made to the bride’s fanciful wishes, whether it be a high-powered headwear statement or a subtle highlight.

On this enchanting Summer evening of photo-shoot bliss, we were very kindly joined by some fresh fellow artisans. Behind the camera it is pleasure to introduce to you Will Botin, photographer extraordinaire who captured the balmy, unearthly beauty of the moment to perfection. The Ultimate Bridal Fantasy was complete with wedding hair and make-up by Yasemin Kaya of ‘Heading Out Hair & Beauty’ in Balwyn North. The elegant up-do and flawless complexion made Kelly’s bridal dream come alive! Many thanks to you both.

Bonnie Evelyn Millinery is the perfect icing on the (wedding) cake!

Miss December 2011:
Angel of the Holiday Season, Miss Carla Chianese!

December is a time when we celebrate the end of the year, enjoy the company of friends and loved ones, eat too much and party hard – awesome!  Time to break out some pretty little floral headbands, clips and head pieces to add some zing to your festive Summer ensemble! This month, I felt the need to capture the essence of all the good will going around. Lucky for us, an angel fell upon this earth who is dedicated to the well-being of others, providing equal opportunities and being generally lovely…. her name is Carla and she has most kindly agreed to be our divine Model of the Month, showing us some effortless Summer holiday styling.

Carla has a Masters in International Development and works for the Australian Electoral Commission. She has recently been appointed as Australian Youth Ambassador for Development, as an electoral officer in Kenya. For Carla, this highly sought after position is the start of a career in helping developing countries.

As well as being selfless in nature (and well on the way to world peace), Carla knows how to have a good time! So we borrowed her for a day of snapping down at South Melbourne beach in some Bonnie Evelyn headpieces, perfect for the season’s festivities. Once again thank you Miss Kelly Banister for the picture taking, Lucy for helping, Carla for modeling and the weather for being nice.

Miss November 2011:
Lucy Farmer visual artist, performance artist and stunning race goer

November is the epicenter of the Spring Racing Earthquake! The best racing of the country reaches a climax with all the action at Flemington Race Course.  Not only is there racing but there’s also the fashion, glamour, celebrities, lunches, drinks, bets, the thrills, the spills, and most importantly, the hats!!

I had some AMAZING (but rater expensive) ideas of how to present some top Bonnie Evelyn headwear in the thick of the action.  Turns out my ideas are a little too extravagant  (and a logistical nightmare as well) so Miss Lucy Farmer, resident illustrator, performance artist, Bonnie Evelyn blogger and hat entrepreneur has risen to the occasion and delivered some very glamorous and epic shots…… ‘imagination’ style!

You can achieve a lot with a limitless imagination and Lucy certainly has that! Not only is she able to turn a few far-fetched ideas into ‘realities’, but she also rises to the occasion looking like a super star in Bonnie Evelyn headwear!

Lucy is currently creating the performance ‘Hiatus’ with fellow performance maker Fiona Bryant, to be shown in the 2012 Next Wave Festival, and she is also busy illustrating a children’s book. When not busy with all the performing and illustrating Lucy can often be found in the Kings ARI Studios (where she is a resident studio artist) painting portraits and other excellent artistic masterpieces.

Not only are we lucky enough to be graced with the supreme beauty and creativity of the lovely Lucy, but thanks must also go to our fabulous photographer Kelly Bannister and Tony the Pony (who came out of retirement after his own stunning track career) to star along side Lucy in some choice action pics!

Miss October 2011:
Jemma Thomas, fashion blogger, free-lance writer and all-round super-stylish woman! So Spring, so vogue!!

We are very lucky this month to have the always-chic Jemma Thomas as our Miss October! The sizzling glamazon Jemma works for fashion magazines Grazia, madison and Harper’s BAZAAR and is also a free-lance fashion writer. She keeps us up-to-date with her take on the latest fashion trends on her blog, notaromanticmixtape.blogspot.com (awesome stuff, go look).

This October Jemma is looking divine at Burnley Park in Richmond. We have asked her to put together some racy outfits to team with some killer Bonnie Evelyn hats! Thanks to resident Bonnie Evelyn photographer Kelly Bannister for again, capturing the beauty of our model and the energy and vibrancy of this seasons hottest looks!

Jemma, apart from being a stunning model, she was kind enough to share with us her Spring Racing Fashion tips:

What colours and styles will we see at the races this year?
Bright, vibrant hues are flooding the fashion runways this spring/summer and will be a popular choice for many at this years spring racing carnival. I am coveting boxy shifts in lavish reds, pops of pink, cobalt blue and burnt orange.
You will also see a touch of 50’s inspired frocks in dainty, feminine prints with elongated hemlines, cinched in at the waist.

Who/what are your biggest influences in fashion?
Those who can work their own individual look and personality into their outfits to create a clearly defined statement, without it looking overtly ‘styled’.

How do you personally put together an outfit?
I try not to over think it. My wardrobe is complete organized chaos, so what I see first, depending on my mood will generally be worn. I like to keep my look quite simple and work around strong key pieces in pants, heels and jackets.

How much influence does celebrity styling have on what’s worn to the races?
When it comes to spring racing, I don’t think women look toward celebrities for style inspiration. It is more about experimenting with what is currently trending and how to incorporate this season’s key look into your outfit.

What do you look for in racing headwear?
Something that work cohesively with my outfit and overall desired look. Comfort is key along with a unique design with a point of difference.

Any style tips for 2011 Spring Racing Fashion?
Experiment, enjoy the process and remain true to your personal style. If you are going to block-out your outfit, keep it clean and wear with intention. Think about colours that work together – you want a cohesive colour combo not a rainbow of madness. Feel free to break up colours with muted tones, such as black and grey, this will allow you to embrace pops of colour without over doing it.

Miss September 2011:
Alex Foxcroft, lawyer, Spring Racing fashion enthusiast – what can we say, she’s a FOX!!

September means the start of Spring. It is a time of sunshine, showers, flowers, hay fever, new shoes, spray tans, and baby animals. Nothing means springtime more in Melbourne then the Races, and no one conjures the ideal of style and racing good taste than Miss Alex Foxcroft!

Alex is a young lawyer and supreme racing enthusiast. I have previously blogged about Alex’s feature article on racing fashion in the Law Institute Journal (in which I may have exhausted almost all of the ‘fox’ puns I can think of).

Alex takes her racing fashion seriously, taking time in the lead up to the Spring Racing Carnival to keep abreast with current trends and plan her stylish ensembles.  By planning ahead, Alex is able to get in early with tailors and milliners before the crazy season descends (so we love her)*.

Alex’s racing style is often colourful and is always well tailored, extremely sophisticated and elegant.  Most importantly she understands the importance of how a good hat brings together a racing look and turns it into a stand-out fashion MASTERPIECE.

So venturing into the hat-making lair, the fox has picked some favorite Bonnie Evelyn hats and headpieces to team with some choice outfits, and very kindly spent the first sunny Sunday of the year shooting stunning pictures. Foxy was shot by the lovely Kelly Banister and bossed around by myself and fed by the divine heavenly creatures Meg and Lucy Farmer.

Thank you Miss September for getting us all excited about the huge racing season to come. Can’t wait to see you trot your stuff on the track!

*You too could be loved by your Milliner if you come in with your outfit early on.

Miss August 2011:
Emma van Leest, Artist, Jewellery Designer and Ray of Sunshine on a Melbourne Winters Day

After the coldest winter ever (a fact I made up just then but surely it must be true) hat gods smiled upon the four young ladies on the roof of a Melbourne artists studio. The sun came out, the temperature hit a pleasant 18C and the sparkling talent and beauty of our ‘Model of the Month’ Emma van Leest shone!

The lovely paper-cutting artist and now jewellery designer, Emma very kindly took some time out to display her new range of stunning stainless-steel jewellery along with her pick of favorite Bonnie Evelyn hats!  Where better to do so then right where the magic happens at Kings ARI studios where Emma has been making intricate paper-cutting masterpieces for the last 4 years.

Emma was recently commissioned by Polli to design a range of ultra stylish earrings and necklaces in stainless-steel. The jewellery is complex and exquisite, the detail is divine and delicate, with cut out shapes and etching to complete the finish.

In her lifetime as an artist Emma has done many a cool thing. She is represented by Tim Olsen Gallery in Sydney, John Buckley Gallery in Melbourne and recently she was filmed by the ABC for Art Nation. Not only has she done all this, but she also looks damn good in a hat!

So combined with the talent of photographic extraordinaire Kelly Bannister (and Lucy and myself) we used the rays to capture these angelic images that best show off some seriously stunning Emma van Leest and Bonnie Evelyn originals!

Emma has a website which I personally recommend that everyone go and look at: www.emmavanleest.com and you can see all the jewellery designs at www.polli.com.au.
